Some of Jhessye's relatives are speaking out about allegations that the little girl may have been abused and speculating why Child Protective Services (CPS) took her siblings from her mother's home after she went missing, reports ABC15 News. A cousin of Jhessye's told ABC15 she had no doubt that the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, abused her. "At our functions, and get-togethers, Jhessye was not herself," Lisa Vance said. "I've seen marks that led me to believe she was being abused in Jerice's home." Hunter reportedly has a criminal record which includes a history of child abuse, but she was given custody of Jhessye after being released from prison last year. CPS also took custody of Hunter's three other children shortly after Jhessye's disappearance. However, the agency would not state why they were removed, and police have not confirmed that Jhessye was abused or if Hunter is a suspect. Jhessye's grandmother, Shirley Johnson, told ABC15 that CPS took the children because the agency said "they were in danger." Under Arizona law, if a person who is responsible for the care and treatment of a minor reasonably believes the minor is being subjected to child abuse, the person is required to report the abuse to the proper authorities. Whether Jhessye Shockley and her siblings were victims of child abuse doesn't matter to Jhessye's grandmother right now though. She has focused on both finding Jhessye and bringing her siblings home. In the words of the purple t-shirt she has begun wearing since Jhessye's disappearance, "Grandma won't stop!"
