captive orca profiles 106 bonnie

BONNIE AND HER CALF Bonnie was captured off British Columbia with 6 other orca. One escaped and the two larger females, Bonnie and Kianu were bought by Marine World Africa (now Six Flags). Whilst in the bay both females refused to eat and their health declined. Whilst doing checks on them it was discovered that they were not just bog standard orca, they were both pregnant. Despite this their transfer was already arranged and although it was though the harness's may harm the babies it still went ahead. 35 days after the transfer Bonnie went into labour and delivered a stillborn calf on July 14th 1968. Bonnie suffered from birth complications and died herself 15 days later. Kianu also gave birth to a stillborn on August 28th although she did survive the pregnancy. There are no pictures of Bonnie other than this of them arriving in the slings which probably contributed to her death. MArine World Africa
