TAKU - was born on Sept 9th 1993 to mother Katina and father Tilikum. He was extremely close to his mother. In 2005 he had an incident with one of his trainers - 11-year-old male Taku, one of nine at the park that go by the stage name Shamu, swam rapidly past the trainer and circled back, bumping him repeatedly during the Shamu Adventure show at 12:30 p.m. Friday, spokeswoman Becca Bides said. "The trainer maintained control of the animal," Bides said, and the show continued uninterrupted. The trainer, supervisor Sam Davis, was taken to Sand Lake Hospital for unspecified minor injuries and released the same day, she said. Additional eyewitness account: "The trainer and Taku were about to slide on the slide out at the end of the show when Taku completly stopped and started "bumping" the trainer. The trainer was male and he finally swam out of the tank. I knew something was wrong because non of the whale except Kalina wanted to perform. Then they finally got Taku out to splash people at the end of the show, when this incident took place." In 2004 he met a new whale who had been transferred called Takara, he liked her and followed her everywhere. 18 moths later she gave birth to his first calf Trua. In September 2006 his mum also gave birth to his calf Nalani, which made her a full inbred from mother and son. Sickeningly she is referred to as 'the first succesful inbred calf' I believe there is nothing successful about it, it should never have happened. He was transferred to San Antonio in 2007 where he was described as a gentle whale with no incidents against trainers, his 'incident' wasn't really an incident it was just over excitedness. Yet another lie to hide the fact that Taku and all the other orca that day had had enough. In October 2007 he became ill and died reportedly from west nile virus. His autopsy report however shows that Taku really was a sick whale, it lists mild multifocal meningeal hyperemia and petechial parenchymal hemorrhage were noted in the right cerebrum and cerebellum extensive tan discoloration and fibrosis were present in the right accessory lung lobe with associated hemorrhage and congestion The second gastric chamber displayed numerous chronic and active ulcerations of 1.5–2 cm. Histologic review demonstrated moderate multifocalsubacute vasculitis and nonsuppurative encephalitis. Inflammatory lesions of the central nervous system werefocused in gray matter of the medulla oblongata, pons,mesencephalan, and cerebellum. Lesions were bilateral but more severe on the right side. Meninges demonstratedmoderate focally extensive and multifocal areas of acutemeningeal congestion and hemorrhage. Blood vessels demonstrated mild to moderate acutenecrosis and lymphocytic and contained plasmacytic andneutrophilic infiltrates within vascular walls. Gastric ulcerations were present in the first gastric chamber and were chronic and active. They were characterized by central ulcerations with necrosis and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate surrounded by variable fibrosis and a rim of epithelial hyperplasia. Conventional diagnostic assays were performed for aerobic, anaerobic, and fungal microbes in liver, lung,kidney, cerebrospinal fluid, and brain. All yielded minimal growth of Escherichia coli. The final diagnosis was fulminant peracute bacteremia and septicemia secondary to a primary viral infection associated with non suppurative encephalitis. Due to his brain, lungs, blood vessels, having 2 lots of ulcers and the west nile virus, I find it very dfficult to believe that he showed no precursors until the day he died. However that is just my view. He would not have died had he been in the ocean where contact with mosquito and stress related ulcers would have been none existent.
