1051 - The story of Lady GODIVA comes from an ancient Anglo-Saxon legend of the 11th Century. Lady GODIVA was the wife of Leofric the earl of Mercia, one of seven English counties of the 11th Century. Leofric was stingy and greedy. The inhabitants of the county of Coventry were suffering from an exorbitantly high tax.Lady GODIVA felt sorry for the citizens. She appealed again and again to her husband, who stubbornly refused to spare the suffering people of the county the collected taxes. Tired of her constant appeales, he made her an immoral proposal: He would cut taxes and help the needy population. But she would have to ride on a horse through the streets of the city bare and naked! Lady GODIVA took him at his word! After issuing a proclamation that all persons stay at home and had to keep their windows closed, she rode through the city, covered only by her long hair. Leofric, was so impressed of the courage of his wife that he cutted all taxes - except on horses
