Victorian Family Christmas Eve.
The Harris family traditionally met at the eldest son's home on Christmas Eve for a time of fun, games and a special supper. Then Grandad Harris would open the family Bible to the Gospel of Luke, and read the account of how the Lord Jesus was born in a stable. He then allowed the children to sing the carol, "Away in a manger". His son would then read the passage where the shepherds on the hills of Bethlehem suddenly saw a bright light, and an angel of God said, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord". Following the reading of God's Word, they all joined hands as a family while Grandad thanked the Lord for the Saviour who was born in Bethlehem, and who grew to manhood, and died upon the cross for all of their sins. Then they all enjoyed the lovely supper Grandmama had prepared for them.
