In season 1 Elena is in nearer selection to became Miss Mystic Falls. In one episode the possible Miss Mystic Falls have to learn dancing for the Founder's Day. Stefan was the guy Elena has to dance with actually but he wasn't there so Damon used her situation to get a romantic moment with Elena. Except that he wanted to be her friend so Damon helped her and danced with Elena instead of Stefan. Elena was very grateful for that.
