Atuais pesquisas apontam que o gênero musical nasceu nas classes populares da Áustria e no sul da Alemanha, onde havia várias danças similares, com nomes como Dreher (“torneiro”), Deustcher tanz (“dança alemã”) ou Walzer (“girar”, “rodar”). Provavelmente é derivativa do “The Lander”, dançada com giros rápidos e contínuos pelos camponeses da Alemanha Meridional e Baviera e, mais tarde, para deixar de ser rotulada de imoral e vulgar pelas camadas sociais mais altas, absorve também características do Minueto - uma das danças da corte que foram “decapitadas” pela Revolução Francesa. Assim, Viena acabou por ser o grande berço da Valsa, que passou a ser considerada dança de grande elegância, vindo a substituir os minuetos e gavotas. Atualmente, a valsa mantém grande prestígio no mundo da dança de salão, sendo que nos Estados Unidos assumiu um tempo mais lento, permitindo uma dança mais suave e de deslize gracioso nos movimentos de fluxo e refluxo.
